Is there a Magic Bullet for COVID19?

Many of you have been asking about the medications that became popular in the news last week and whether or not it is a good idea to take them preventatively.

Here’s the Answer – NO, absolutely not.

We are learning more and more each day from the front lines. The front lines are not the best place to get information that can be extrapolated to healthy people. What may work for an acutely ill person in a last-ditch effort to save their life is not the same thing that will preventatively help you or me. All medications have side effects and compromise the body. You do not want to compromise your system in any way with COVID19 floating around. You want your body and mind to be as strong as ever should you get exposed.

The virus attacks ACE2 receptors in the body. ACE2 receptors are found in digestive tissue, lung tissue, heart tissue, kidneys. Having a strong microbiome, (healthy gut) is one of the ways to reduce the negative effects of infection. Taking antibiotics kills off your microbiome. Only take them if you absolutely must.

The most common medications that have made the news are Azithromycin and Hydroxychloroquine. Because of the “potential” benefit of hydroxychloroquine with COVID19, patients we are taking essential medications away from lupus patients. These people can no longer get their prescriptions filled. I heard from a practice member just this week with lupus that she had to call four different compounding pharmacies to see if she could get it compounded. The cost was 10x what it would normally be. All the brand pharmacies are sold out.

Is a vaccine for COVID19 on the horizon?

Yes, the distant horizon. A vaccine is not coming soon. Realistic projections for when a quality vaccine can come to market are 5 years out.

This is not the time to grasp and hope for a miracle drug or cure, there is not one. Believe me, if we could all take some pills, green or otherwise for COVID19 we would be on the rooftops throwing them out like skittles.

Do not take steroids, antibiotics, or any other medication in your medicine cabinet at home just for good measure. You are better off working to build your own body up by reversing disease, supporting immunity, and doing good self-care. All the things that Naturopathic medicine teaches. Please let this be a reminder that we must tightly hold on to our health and take back control of it. Putting our health into the hands of someone else isn’t a good idea. You are better off with natural foods, fresh produce, exercise, good sleep, sunlight, and herbs straight from mother nature’s treasury.

Wishing you Well,

Dr. Purcell
