Here are the key roles of the liver:

  • Blood Filtration: The liver filters blood coming from the digestive tract, removing impurities, toxins, and waste products.
  • Nutrient Extraction: It extracts essential nutrients (such as vitamins, minerals, and glucose) from the blood, ensuring they reach other body tissues.
  • Detoxification: The liver neutralizes harmful substances, including drugs, alcohol, and metabolic byproducts.
  • Bile Production: It produces bile, which aids in fat digestion and absorption.
  • Storage: The liver stores glycogen (a form of glucose), vitamins, and minerals.
  • Metabolism: It plays a central role in various metabolic processes, including protein synthesis and cholesterol regulation.

Correcting Fatty Liver: A Growing Concern

Fatty liver, or MAFLD (Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease), occurs when more than 5 percent of liver cells die or turn to fat. It’s an escalating health issue, affecting up to 40 percent of the population, and is predicted to become the leading cause of liver transplants.
