Ditch the Mainstream and Get Real

Six years ago, my husband and I returned to Arizona. It was my second opportunity to live in the Valley of the sun and I was hungry for it.  I was dreaming of the smell of orange blossoms in spring and the wet waxy aroma of chaparral after a heavy desert rain. The hiking in Arizona is superb and the topography changes dramatically with an elevation of a few thousand feet. The desert has long attracted people longing to connect more deeply with the earth. I was initially drawn to Arizona as the location of one in only three Naturopathic medical schools at the time. The teachings of which promise to Do no harm, Treat the cause and Doctor as teacher and guide. Having arrived to Phoenix in early 1999 the desert spoke to me in a soul cleansing kind of way. I quickly learned the native plants and the medicine contained within them. Phoenix held a unique mix of old and new leading the way as to what is now the nation’s 6th largest city.

Progress here like in many other cities has not come without a price. Today there are pharmacies on almost every corner. Cancer clinics are no longer limited to the big city. Now you will find boutique cancer centers popping up in every small city too. No matter where you go…

Mainstream America is streaming in.

Now more than ever it’s important to be aware of where you are in it and if you would rather be on the fringe of it. These days I still drum along to my own beat. Just the other day my husband had eaten out and gotten food poisoning… as I doctored him back to health I found myself wondering what do people do without this knowledge?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every mom was taught some simple principles to help keep herself and her family healthy?

Then perhaps we wouldn’t have the need for a pharmacy on every corner and run to urgent care for every little thing. But then that would affect the prospectus of big-pharma who also happens to have close ties to the chemical manufacturing industry.

Naturopathic medicine is not mainstream. The medical establishment shuns it. The insurance companies won’t cover it and the pharmaceutical companies can’t patent it. Think for a minute when have you ever seen a commercial for fresh broccoli or fresh spinach? They don’t exist.

Choosing to use naturopathic medicine means that you have decided to some extent to take your health into your own hands.

Search for answers out of the line of sight of what some of the best trained doctors and specialists would recommend. With this model, you get to decide what’s best for you and are no longer pushed along by what modern medicine claims to be the best in it’s class.

Just take a moment and think about what your insurance card covers. Medications, doctor’s visits, testing, and surgery. That’s it. It’s not really health care, it’s disease care. Caring for a disease that you don’t want. A disease that’s interfering with the life you’re trying to live.

The almighty health Insurance card doesn’t cover a gym membership (until you are over 65), buy you organic food, or give you a health education.

Those are three essential elements that form the basis for healing. That’s what true health care is. Caring for your health while you still have it and preventing the loss of it.

The current medical system works best for crisis care. Crisis care is only about 10% of what Americans are facing these days. The bigger looming threat is losing your health insidiously over time. The slowly invasive chronic diseases that rob you of the life you have worked hard for. The retirement you have been waiting to enjoy. The grandkids that haven’t arrived yet and most importantly who you really are.

Chronic disease has become the price of progress at the expense of your health, your life and your well-being.

There are about 325million people in the United States. Roughly 280million are dealing with some type of chronic disease that conventional medicine has no real answers for. These conditions fall into the realm of mystery illness or idiopathic illness. Conditions like fatigue, migraines, digestive troubles, Insomnia, auto-immune, neuropathy, brain fog, diabetes, heart disease, hormone troubles, fertility, body pain, hair loss, unexplained skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis, anxiety, depression, and cancer. Cancer is now the 2nd biggest killer of Americans standing just behind heart disease as the number 1 reason why people leave this earth earlier than they should.

The war on cancer has resulted in multi-million-dollar spa-like facilities appearing in nearly every city. The war on cancer would have you believe that there is a cure and they will find it. The cure resides in reducing our chemical and toxin load, the cure comes in eating fresh fruits and vegetables that God put on this planet for nourishment, the cure comes in avoiding mainstream media and fear based thinking. The cure resides in reducing stress and doing what makes you happy. The cure comes in the form of grocery shopping and preparing meals at home. The cure comes from educating our children about nutrition and building up our immune systems. The cure begins by driving by the drive-thru and not giving it a second glance.

If you follow the mainstream chances are pretty good that you will end up knocking on the door of a main stream medical establishment at some point in time.

Choosing to steer clear of the mainstream may be the smartest decision you have ever made.

Those swanky cancer clinics are filled with real people with real dreams. Building them to appear freakishly inviting and spa-like doesn’t make me want to book a room. I choose nature, sunshine, clean air, pure water, and the garden that Mother Nature put here on earth for us to select from.

Natural medicine is so much more than taking some green pills… it’s about protecting the health that you do have and making the most of this one great precious life.

I often find myself saying, I can’t heal you. I can only guide you.

You and your body do the healing together. All it takes is action from this point forward. Change your view point and chart your course. If you can get sick, you can get well. Your body can heal.

There is hope and there is help.
Let the healing begin!

Last Thoughts of Steve Jobs

“You can employ someone to drive a car for you, and to make money for you, but you cannot employ anyone to bear illness for you.

Material things, when lost, can be found, but the one thing, that can never be found when it is lost, is your health and eventually your life itself.

When a person goes into the operating room, he realizes that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading, “The Book of Healthy Life”.

Whatever stage in life we are at currently, in time we all face that day when the curtain comes down.

You will come to realize that true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world.

Therefore, treasure health, your buddies, old friends, brothers and sisters.  Chat often, laugh, sing songs with them.  That is true happiness.”
