What's actually changing in your cardiovascular system
Estrogen does more than regulate periods. It maintains the elasticity of blood vessel walls. It influences how your liver processes cholesterol. It affects insulin sensitivity. Why "your cholesterol is fine" is misleading
The standard lipid panel — total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides — misses critical information. LDL particle number and size matter more than the total. Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), lipoprotein(a), and inflammation markers like hs-CRP and homocysteine paint a much truer cardiovascular risk picture. Most women have never had any of these tested.
How I approach cardiovascular and metabolic risk
Testing — the panel your regular doctor isn't running
Advanced lipid panel — LDL particle number and size, ApoB, Lp(a), oxidized LDL
Inflammation markers — hs-CRP, homocysteine, fibrinogen
Metabolic markers — fasting insulin, A1C, fasting glucose, leptin
Hormone panel — estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA
Thyroid panel — full thyroid (hypothyroidism is a hidden cardiovascular risk factor)
Nutrient cofactors — vitamin D, magnesium, omega-3 index, CoQ10 (especially if you're on statins)
