Prevention: Why Traditional and Natural Medicine Should Both Be in Your Arsenal

By January 12, 2023January 19th, 2023Uncategorized, Healthy Living

Whether you’re a busy parent managing the kids, an entrepreneur running your own business, or a recent retiree traveling around the world, no matter what stage of life you are in, you deserve to prioritize your health and wellbeing. In today’s hectic lifestyles, it is easy to be swayed by short-term solutions that offer quick fixes; however, we are all increasingly aware of the importance of preventative medicine when it comes to overall long-term well-being. With this in mind, I invite you on a journey of exploration as we weigh up traditional and natural medicines and take steps toward putting prevention at the heart of our healthcare practices.

Prevention is actually a secret.

Well, why is it a secret?

Natural medicine is the best-kept secret out there because it focuses on prevention.

Prevention is the act of stopping something from happening or arising. Although conventional medicine is more about treating symptoms, natural medicine takes a holistic approach to prevent them. Simply put, focus on prevention for long-term health and wellness. It was Benjamin Franklin who said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

So it does beg the question: why, in the field of medicine, are we so focused on managing and treating disease when we should be focused on preventing it?

Why indeed?

Doctors don’t have much control. The insurance companies and the drug companies make the decisions, especially for Medicare. Medicare sets the stage, and other insurance companies follow suit because they watch what Medicare does.

So Medicare has a stock response about prevention. It says: “Maintenance therapy, which are services that seek to prevent disease, promote health, maintain, or prevent the deterioration of a chronic condition, or prolong or enhance the quality of life, is not considered medically necessary.

Because of this position statement, prevention will continue to be ignored in the field of medicine today.

I have been in the field of alternative medicine (some call it integrative medicine) for 20 years. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of motivating patients to strive towards greater heights in their health and well-being. It’s a process that brings real joy when they finally reach those goals. This is something that can rarely be achieved with current standards.

The standard of care currently is symptom suppression, a ‘band-aid approach,” and disease management. I’ve waited patiently as the grassroots movement of natural and preventative medicine has risen to the surface in some parts of the US. This can certainly be seen in the success of local farmers’ markets, larger health food stores such as Sprouts and Whole Foods, the availability of organic produce in conventional grocers, and so on.

The Mainstream Medicine Dogma

The idea that natural substances, nutritional supplements, and dietary changes can help prevent and treat disease is still not accepted by mainstream medicine. But there are many studies that show natural medicine can help people. And more and more people are beginning to see the benefits of using natural therapies.

I know that changing the status quo takes time. I understand too that when we, as a population, are faced with new ideas that fly in the face of conventional dogma, we can either embrace them or ignore them. There was a time long ago when the majority of the population thought the sun went around the earth, and then we decided to imprison the man who told us otherwise.

Afterward, the population did indeed find out that the earth and other planets revolved around the sun. Whoops!

Integrative Medicine

The thing is, you only have one great, precious life, and natural medicine is the best-kept secret out there.

Preventative medical care is less expensive than mainstream medicine.

Yes, preventative healthcare might come with a slightly higher upfront cost, but it’s peanuts compared to the hefty invoice for surgery or long-term medical treatments. Smart money goes into preventive care today.

Let me tell you firsthand how natural medicines work.

I’ve been in this field for 20 years. It isn’t some type of hippie-dippy nonsense.

Natural therapies are based on science, and treatment recommendations follow the laws of nature, which are the laws of your body. This is something you will understand right away. Once you know how the body works, it will seem obvious.

This short statement by Medicare makes it very clear.

“If you want to prevent disease and the deterioration of your body and prolong or enhance the quality of your life, that is up to you.”

Therefore, unless you have incredible genes, health happens by choice, not by chance. Utilizing preventative medicine will help you regain and maintain optimal health. You don’t have to be a sitting duck waiting for a disease to strike. There are things you can do today to reverse or prevent whatever is going on with you.

A Case of Difficulty Sleeping

I had a woman come into my office, and she was having such a hard time sleeping.

She said, “I’m just miserable.” I might have to stop working. “I feel like I can’t even function, Dr. Purcell.”

Working with her, we were able to make use of natural medicine and rebalance hormones. The result? a newfound freedom from sleepless nights—something she hadn’t experienced in years. Not only did this bring refreshing rest but a greater understanding of what was happening within her own body, which allowed it to start humming along again.

And she said, “Dr. Purcell, this is the best decision that I’ve ever made, and I’m so grateful.”

Struggling with nowhere to turn? Don’t despair of your options yet! Natural medicine is the ultimate hidden gem—and could be the perfect remedy for all you’re going through. Why not give it a try today and reclaim some peace of mind in no time at all?

If you’re still not convinced that integrative medicine is the way to go, consider this: when was the last time your primary care physician took the time to get to know you and your unique case? When was the last time he or she looked beyond your symptoms to understand their root causes?
