BY DR. ANDREA PURCELL

I was talking to a practice member this week who had self-quarantined for 2 weeks after returning home to Phoenix from South America. Thankfully it has been 2 weeks and her and her husband are both fine. She got back just in the nick of time and stepped back into a completely different way of life here in the US. She shared that they had had a house-cleaner for over twenty years. Not only had she not cleaned her own house for that long but didn’t have any cleaning products with which to do so. Some of us may also be in that boat faced with housecleaning to do and no products to do so.

I thought I would provide you with a few DIY recipes made with safe non-toxic ingredients.

All-Purpose Cleaner

What you’ll need:

  • One part white vinegar
  • One part water
  • Lemon rind – chopped into 1 inch pieces
  • Rosemary sprigs -2-3

Hurry up and mix this one up. It needs to sit for a week in order for the lemon and rosemary to infuse. If you have lemon, orange, rosemary, essential oils you can take the short-cut and add 25-50 drops of essential oils to your spray bottle, it will be ready the same day. If you use the recipe above, combine it all together, pour into a spray bottle, shake, and then let infuse for a week before using. Simply spray and wipe clean.
*Do not use on stone or granite.

Kitchen Cleaner and Deodorizer

What you’ll need:

  • 4 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 quart warm water

When I got married my mother gave me a book entitled, “101 ways to use baking soda.” After reading that book I was convinced that all I needed was baking soda. Costco sells giant bags of the stuff. Baking soda to the rescue to clean kitchen counters, appliances, and the inside of your refrigerator. It can be used to shine stainless steel sinks and appliances. To shine make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply it with a damp cloth and rub gently in the direction of the metal’s grain. Rinse and buff dry.
