BY DR. ANDREA PURCELL
In our rational minds, we know that the only constant is change. Yet as humans we fight it…HARD. We don’t like it. We focus on what we will LOSE instead of what we will GAIN.
WHY?
Because we know what we will lose…and…we don’t exactly know what we will gain.
This is a conversation I have DAILY with my patients. Change is uncomfortable, not knowing what to expect is uncomfortable, very little is guaranteed.
Yet, we want more energy, to shed cumbersome pounds, feel lighter, happier, and have better relationships.
Change is necessary to move from one point to another.
We can drag our feet we can procrastinate, go outside and yell at the top of our lungs. We can have a pity party and cry over eating our last slice of pie for a while… The truth is that something different must happen. All of the current choices haven’t yielded the results we were wanting. So, a change is exactly what must happen next.
Bottom Line: If you want to see change then you have to make a change.
This year has forced us out of our comfort zones. It has dramatically shaken up the routines we had established for ourselves. Maybe we really enjoyed them…perhaps you were happy as a clam…we didn’t think our life was in need of a make-over…yet here we are experiencing change in every single part of our lives.
Resistance is Exhausting
Because change is uncomfortable we resist. We throw rocks into a moving river in an attempt to slow down the waterfall, we BUCK the change… and that expends precious energy.
Change can be a shock.
Resisting change is exhausting…always…stop resisting.
There shouldn’t be any “waiting” for better times. That negates the power of THIS moment. That way of thinking robs us from finding the PEACE in the now.
Do not give any power away to quarantine, that only distances us from our dreams… now is the time to reflect on personal habits, health, and routines that promote good feelings.
The Downside of Comfort
Generally, within our comfort zones there are habits that do not serve us.
Often there is a level of comfort gained from instant gratification and results at the expense of other things…often our dreams.
That short-sighted way of life is hard to live with over time because it doesn’t bring the things we truly want within reach, and leaves us feeling down on ourselves.
The Upside of Change
What 2020, the year of great vision, is assisting us with are new ways to look at where we have been hamsters on wheels. Lives filled with distractions and unessential’s.
This year is important for self-awareness…to really get clear on what is important to us…and give those things priority so we can take ownership of them.
It has eliminated a lot of the distraction we were filling our lives with and it has presented opportunities…opportunities to reflect on our lives and take a hard look at what should have been pruned so that we can grow back stronger.
Developing new routines, and better habits is hard work…initially…but then becomes easy to live with as we see ourselves gaining positive momentum, and feel better about ourselves.
Let me ask you a question, over the last six months have you taken the time to think about what makes you happy? Truly Happy?
Think with me for a moment about how you were operating pre-covid?
Now think about your current lifestyle. How are you operating with the changes? Do you feel like you are surviving? Is each day difficult? Have you lost your joy? What is missing? Are you resisting?
The truth is it is much easier to release our hold on the things we cannot control and allow them to happen. There is an unfolding happening and we are on a global ride. It’s natural to think about when the ride will end, yet we miss the opportunity in the moments.
The Power of Simplicity
It is a good time to ask ourselves…What can be simplified further?
Remember, trimming the tree this season helps it grow back stronger in the next.
Think on the ways you can cut back and simplify aspects of your life so you can up level other pieces of your life to bring in more joy, more peace, more connection, more significance into your days…
I know that you are powerful beyond measure, I know that once you put your mind to things, change happens, I BELIEVE IN YOU…you’ve got this
Hugs,
Dr. Purcell
