The Menopause Gap: Why Normal Lab Results Don’t Always Tell the Whole Story
“I’ve spent hours searching my symptoms online. My doctor says my labs are normal. I’ve tried supplements, listened to podcasts, and read every article I can find… so why do I still feel like something isn’t right?”
If that thought has crossed your mind, you’re describing a conversation I have with women every single week.
Many arrive at my office feeling frustrated because they know their bodies have changed, but they still don’t have answers. They’re sleeping differently. Their energy has shifted. Their moods feel unfamiliar. Weight is harder to manage. They simply don’t feel like themselves anymore.
Then they hear the same response:
“Your labs look normal.”
This is what I call the menopause gap—the space between where you are today and where you want to be. It’s where many women spend months, or even years, looking for answers without understanding why they feel so different.
Why Normal Lab Results Don’t Tell the Whole Story
One of the biggest misconceptions about perimenopause is that your blood work should explain everything.
It doesn’t.
Perimenopause isn’t a single event—it’s a transition. It can last anywhere from two to ten years, and during that time, your hormones don’t decline in a straight line. They fluctuate constantly. One month estrogen may be higher, the next it may drop significantly. Progesterone often begins to decline earlier, creating hormonal shifts that can affect how you feel from one cycle to the next.
That’s why a single blood test only captures one moment in time. It may not reflect the hormone fluctuations that have been affecting you for weeks or even months.
This is one of the reasons I don’t rely on lab numbers alone.
Your Symptoms Are Part of the Story
One of the first things I tell my patients is that symptoms matter.
Your body is always communicating with you. Hot flashes, poor sleep, brain fog, mood changes, fatigue, weight changes, or irregular periods aren’t simply inconveniences to cover up—they’re valuable clues that help us understand what’s happening beneath the surface.
Instead of asking, “How do we make this symptom disappear?” I ask, “What is your body trying to tell us?”
That shift changes everything.
Looking Beyond the Numbers
In my practice, I take a much broader view of your health.
Yes, laboratory testing has its place, but it’s only one piece of the picture. I also look at your symptoms, health history, menstrual changes, nutrition, sleep, stress, lifestyle, and how everything has changed over time.
When those pieces come together, they often tell a story that a lab report alone cannot.
My goal isn’t more testing.
My goal is better interpretation.
Because helping women through perimenopause isn’t about managing numbers—it’s about helping you reclaim your energy, confidence, and quality of life.
Small Steps You Can Take Today
While every woman’s journey is unique, here are a few simple ways to begin supporting your body:
📝 Track your symptoms. Notice patterns in your sleep, mood, energy, and menstrual cycle.
😴 Prioritize quality sleep. Rest is one of the best ways to support healthy hormone function.
🥗 Nourish your body. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods that fuel your body consistently.
🌿 Manage stress intentionally. Gentle movement, prayer, deep breathing, or time outdoors can help support hormone balance.
💜 Find a provider who listens. You deserve care that looks beyond lab values and takes the time to understand your whole story.
The Conversation Shouldn’t End With “Your Labs Are Normal”
Perimenopause is one of the most significant hormonal transitions a woman will experience, but it doesn’t have to be something you simply endure.
When we listen to the signals your body is sending, we have an incredible opportunity to support your hormones, protect your long-term health, and help you feel like yourself again.
That’s why I believe normal lab work should never be the end of the conversation. It should be the beginning.
