Your Metabolism Isn’t Broken. It’s Trying to Tell You Something.

Your Metabolism Isn’t Broken. It’s Trying to Tell You Something.

You cleaned up your diet.

You started exercising more consistently.

You expected to feel stronger, healthier, and maybe even see the number on the scale start moving in the right direction.

Instead, your jeans fit a little tighter. Your energy isn’t what it used to be. And you’re left wondering, “What happened?”

One of the biggest myths I hear from women over 40 is, “My metabolism must be broken.”

I understand why they think that.

But the first thing I want you to know is this:

Your body isn’t betraying you. It’s adapting.

That’s a very different message.

Perimenopause and menopause are two of the biggest hormonal transitions your body will ever experience.  Once you understand what’s changing beneath the surface, you’ll stop blaming your metabolism and start giving your body the support it’s been asking for all along.

Your Metabolism Is More Than a Number on the Scale

When most people think about metabolism, they think about burning calories.

But that’s only one small piece of the picture.

Your metabolism does far more than burn calories. It’s responsible for creating energy, balancing hormones, repairing tissues, supporting your immune system, and keeping every cell in your body functioning properly.

That’s why I never look at metabolism by itself.

Your hormones, sleep, stress, nutrition, movement, and muscle health are constantly influencing one another. When one changes, the others adapt.

And that’s exactly what happens during perimenopause and menopause.

Why the Same Routine Suddenly Stops Working

One of the hardest parts of this stage of life is that the habits that worked for years often stop producing the same results.

I’ve had patients tell me,

“I’m eating less than ever. I’m exercising more than ever. Why am I gaining weight?”

It’s a fair question.

The answer usually isn’t a lack of effort.

As estrogen changes, your body also changes. You may lose muscle more easily. Your sleep may become lighter. Blood sugar can become more difficult to regulate, and stress has a greater impact than it once did.

Suddenly, your body is operating under a completely different set of conditions.

That’s why simply eating less and exercising harder doesn’t always solve the problem.

The Advice I Wish More Women Heard

One of the biggest mistakes I see is women trying to outwork a hormone problem.

They cut more calories.

They add another workout.

They push themselves even harder.

But when your body is already dealing with hormone changes, poor sleep, and ongoing stress, pushing harder often leaves you feeling even more exhausted.

Your body doesn’t need more punishment.

It needs more support.

That’s a very different way of thinking about health—and one that can change everything.

Where Do You Start?

You don’t need a perfect diet or an extreme exercise plan.

More often than not, it’s the simple, consistent habits that have the biggest impact.

Start here:

  • Prioritize protein to help protect and rebuild lean muscle.
  • Include strength training to support muscle and metabolic health.
  • Protect your sleep, because your body does some of its most important repair work while you rest.
  • Build balanced meals that help keep your blood sugar steady throughout the day.

These aren’t quick fixes.

They’re the foundation of long-term health.

Stop Fighting Your Body

One of my patients shared something with me that I’ve never forgotten.

I’ll never forget when she looked at me and said, “I thought if one workout wasn’t enough, maybe two would be.”

Once we addressed the hormonal changes affecting her body, everything shifted. She no longer felt the need to push herself through back-to-back workouts. One class was enough; her energy returned, and she finally felt like she was working with her body instead of constantly fighting it.

Her story is a reminder that I share often:

Your body isn’t asking you to work harder. It’s asking you to work differently.

A Different Way to Think About Midlife Health

One of the reasons I love caring for women in perimenopause and menopause is that we get to ask better questions.

Instead of asking, “How do I lose weight?”

I ask,

“Why has your body changed?”

Because when we understand the why, we can build a plan that actually works.

That’s how lasting change happens.

What I Want You to Remember

If your metabolism feels different after 40, you’re probably right.

But that doesn’t mean it’s broken.

Your metabolism isn’t broken. It’s adapting.

And when you understand why, everything starts to make more sense.

I truly believe this stage of life can become a season of rebuilding, not just your metabolism, but your energy, your confidence, and your overall health.

And I’d love to help you get there.
